Ordinarily, stitches are knitted in the same order in every row, and the wales of the fabric run parallel and vertically along the fabric. Knitting is worked in rounds (the equivalent of rows in flat knitting) in a spiral.
All other patterns emerge from these few stitches. This produces a reversible fabric with raised horizontal ridges on each side of the work. These meandering loops can be stretched easily in different directions, which gives knitting much more elasticity than woven fabrics; depending on the yarn and knitting pattern, knitted garments can stretch as much as 500%.
The thickness of the yarn may vary along its length; a slub is a much thicker section in which a mass of fibers is incorporated into the yarn. It doesn't care what month it is or what holiday is approaching, there is always something fun to knit. This many take a few weeks depending on how large the blanket is supposed to be.
